The John David Group Plc has long been established as the leading UK specialised multiple retailer of fashionable branded and own brand sports and casual wear, principally through the growth of its main retail fascia, JD Sports. The group now has over 400 stores but it all started when John David Sports was founded in 1981 as a partnership between John Wardle and David Makin with one shop in Bury.

By 1983 the fledgling business was expanding into the Arndale Centre in Manchester and throughout the 1980s there were further openings, largely in the North and Midlands. The first London store was opened in Oxford Street in 1989 and by the time of JD's stock market flotation in 1996 there were 61 stores. Maximum advantage was being taken from the growth in sales of international sports brands such as Adidas, Nike, Reebok and Puma and the trend to wear sportswear more and more in everyday life rather than largely on sportsfields. Additionally, JD had already developed its reputation as the most innovative visual merchandiser of sportswear with the best and most exclusive and stylish ranges.

The business continued to grow organically until 2002 and then acquired nearly 200 further stores with the acquisition of First Sport from Blacks Leisure Group. Most of the stores retained from this acquired portfolio have subsequently been converted to the JD Sports fascia. In 2005 JD also purchased over 70 stores from the Administrators of Allsports (Retail) Limited thereby further consolidating its position as the leading UK retailer of fashionable sports and casual wear. The JD Sports fascia continues to be the group's principal operating fascia. Other fascias operated include First Sport and King Of Trainers.

The group's total portfolio of over 400 stores also includes a small branded young fashion retail chain whose principal fascia is Scotts.

The company has been 57% owned by Pentland Group Plc since mid 2005, a group whose principal interests are in Sports and Fashion Brands, such as Lacoste and Speedo.

Back in the early 80s Richard Branson was probably best know for Virgin Records - the legendary record label that signed major names like the Rolling Stones, Janet Jackson and The Human League. In 1984, much to the horror of his directors, Richard announced to the world that a high quality, value for money airline would begin operating within three months. Three months, some licences, staff and an aircraft packed with celebrities later, Virgin Atlantic Airways was born. By the end of the decade we had flown over 1 million passengers and started shaking up services onboard by being the first airline to offer individual TVs to their business class passengers.

In 1992 Richard sold Virgin Music to Thorn EMI and invested the proceeds into Virgin Atlantic, improving on an already great service. In the same year we launched the first super economy service that went on to become our award winning Premium Economy. We spent most of the Nineties buying new planes, expanding our route network and generally breaking new ground in passenger service, both on the ground and in the air. In 1999 Richard sold a 49% stake in the company to Singapore Airlines valuing us at a minimum of GBP1.225bn. In the same year, for services to entrepreneurship Richard received a knighthood.

The decade is still young and we've already grown and now offer regular services to 25 destinations worldwide.

In 2001 we were voted OAG Airline of the Year.

In 2002 we were the launch customer for the Airbus A340-600.

In 2003 the launch of the Upper Class Suite gave Upper Class passengers the longest flat bed flying and a great nights sleep.
