3. Rate the sexiest swimwear!
Four days after an atomic bomb exploded on little Bikini Atoll in the remote Pacific Ocean, the little bikini exploded into the French language and then into English. On July 5, 1946, Louis Reard revealed to the fashion world of Paris a shockingly skimpy swimsuit he had designed, consisting merely of four triangles of material strategically placed on the female body and held in place by thin straps. No decent woman would think of wearing one; Reard couldn't get any fashion models in town to show it off. But he was able to recruit a nude dancer from the Casino de Paris to pose in the garment, and the rest was front-page history throughout the civilized world.

The French couturier called his sensation a bikini, shamelessly appropriating the name of a place half a world away that had just been the site of an equally sensational news event: the first peacetime explosion of a nuclear weapon. That event was the first of twenty-three American nuclear tests that would extend more than a decade, including a fifteen-megaton H-bomb explosion on March 1, 1954. The tests contaminated Bikini with so much radiation that the survivors and descendants of the 167 pre-bomb inhabitants are still exiles, having been shuttled from island to island while the cleanup of their homeland continues.

Meanwhile, although the bikini was an instant success in the English language, it took much longer to become acceptable beachwear. Brian Hyland's 1960 hit song "Itsy-Bitsy-Teenie-Weenie-Yellow-Polka-Dot Bikini" helped it along, as did the beach movies and liberated styles of the 1960s. Nowadays Bikini itself is visited by tourists wearing bikinis. The food produced at the Bikini Atoll is still too contaminated for permanent residents, but because of the warships sunk there in the first two bomb tests, the Bikini lagoon is now rated among the top scuba diving destinations in the world.

The name Bikini is from the Marshallese language, spoken by about 30,000 people in the Marshall Islands. It belongs to the Micronesian subgroup of Eastern Malayo-Polynesian. No other words from Marshallese have made their way into present-day English.

4. True Religion Jeans, People for Peace, Da-Nang, Sass & Bide, Sweetees, Project E Clothing - OurFashionHouse.com
Renee Roland Patti's designer high-fashion business seems out of place at the back of a nondescript, low-rise office/commercial space in Eastlake. Aside from a small display window and minimal signage, you would never guess what's inside.

Part New York showroom, part warehouse, part boutique and definitely on point with hot, right-now styles seen on the backs of Jessica Simpson, Sienna Miller and Kate Moss, Our Fashion House appears as an oasis on Northeast Ohio's retail fashion scene.

"I'm a trend watcher. I read the fashion mags every day, and I look for who's wearing what," Patti says, explaining the store's ubercurrent inventory. The space is filled with pretty things from Sass & Bide, funky stuff by Heatherette, military chic by Da-Nang and denim from True Religion - a name you've just got to have if you look good in low-rider, hipster jeans.

The periodicals Patti peruses for inspiration include not only traditional fashion publications such as Women's Wear Daily and Vogue but also gossip sheets such as Star and People magazines.

Apparently, watching the trends has paid off for this mother of three girls.

According to Patti, 36, of Eastlake, the originally all-online business generated $19,000 in sales the first year in 2002 and produced more than $500,000 in 2005.

So what are this season's styles that are making the cash register ring?

"Denim is what really made the business from the beginning, and it continues to grow and grow," Patti says. The True Religion line is the biggest seller. Our Fashion House also carries other premium denim from Hudson, People for Peace and Sass and Bide that range in price from $150 to $400.

Shoppers - at the store and online - also will find vintage, distressed preppy polos from Project E from $50 to $70, as well as Da-Nang's spring 2006 collection of military-inspired vintage surplus silk. A right-now pair of khaki walking shorts will set you back $140. For more sophisticated tastes, a Pegah Anvarian open-sided sweater made from 100 percent bamboo sells for $364. At least it's a conversation piece.

Street style shows up in crocheted surfer boots in natural and black for $125. For urban gals, rubber rain boots in a darling antique toile pattern by Tamara Henriques sell for $109.
