Petplanet.co.uk is a privately held business headquartered in Livingston, Scotland. We are fully independent and have no ties to any manufacturers or traditional (i.e. 'bricks and mortar' shops or catalogue based) retailers. A team of over 20 people (including fully qualified vets, a dermatologist, and a behavioural specialist) are responsible for creating the content you find on our site.

We founded the business in mid-1999 as a result of frustration at the poor quality of pet information and services available on the Internet for UK pet lovers. Both of the founding partners have been surrounded by pets for most of their lives, and are keen to encourage responsible and informed pet ownership. PetPlanet.co.uk will never be involved in the direct resale of pets. It is our intention to foster positive relationships with the registered pet charities and breed societies through ongoing consultation and by seeking their approval for all relevant content.

We make a return on sales through our on-line shop, fulfilling all orders ourselves out of our Livingston facility. We also generate some advertising revenue from third parties advertising on our site. However, whilst we are a commercial operation, we also believe that content that encourages informed and responsible pet ownership should be free and ubiquitous. To this end, we do not charge businesses for basic services listings on our site and have avoided any exclusive commercial links that would limit the range of local or travel services listed on our site. Our veterinary advice services and (soon to be launched) interactive ailments database are free to all users.

eDirectory itself holds no stock. We are not the actual retailer, we are the "facilitator", bringing shoppers together with the retailers. We provide a central environment where shoppers can browse and buy from hundreds of retailers (potentially purchasing from multiple retailers using the central eDirectory shopping basket). The individual retailers handle the fulfilment of the customers orders. Since eDirectory itself holds no stock, nor has any warehousing and fulfilment concerns we are able to concentrate our resources on superb customer services and in constantly improving the range and quality of products for sale from our retailers.
