It's our tenth anniversary but the idea stays the same - to share interesting films and to celebrate one of the world's great communal art forms. Thousands of DVDs are released every month; we select the best and most worthwhile and let you know about them - in our monthly film catalogue, on our website, in email newsletters and in the podcast.

MovieMail was started by Carol Hunter in 1996. Carol was never a film intellectual, just someone who really loved movies and noticed that most of her favourites were not easy to get on video and many of them were not made in the English Language.

MovieMail's first order was received on July 7 1996 (for Route de Corinthe, The Tin Drum and Le Boucher). At that time Carol lived on the Scottish Hebridean Island of Islay - not the best choice for fast delivery. MovieMail had a web site within 3 months of its start up. The site has expanded with the business.

In Autumn 1997 Carol moved to Hereford in England, taking MovieMail with her.

In 2000 we opened an office in London to house our publication and marketing efforts.

In April 2005 we formed Moviemail (Jersey) to improve our offering even further. Customer Service is still provided by our experienced staff in London.

In April 2006, we consolidated our two offices into MovieMail Towers, situated in Camden, North London.

A celebrity is a widely-recognized or famous person who commands a high degree of public and media attention. The word stems from the Latin adjective celeber meaning famous or celebrated. While fame is generally considered a necessary precondition for celebrity status, it is not always sufficient. A famous definition of celebrity comes from the cultural theorist Daniel Boorstin. In his book,The Image: A Guide to Pseudo-Events in America, he cynically describes celebrities as people well known for their "well-knowness".

A small number of celebrities can be considered 'global', in that their fame has spread across the English-speaking world and even into non-English-speaking cultures.
