Below is a brief explanation of the leather terminology that is regularly used in the trade. Most leather tanning processes fall into one of the following two categories: Drum Dyed and Vegetable Tanned.

DRUM DYED
In this process the leather is tanned and coloured in a drum, allowing the colour dye to be penetrate into the skin. A typical 'naked' drum dyed or DD leather does not have any finish to cover the natural markings or imperfections on the outer. For this reason, this type of leather is considered to have a uniqueness which is very evident in the feel and look of the finished product. In general DD leather is soft and supple, with distinct natural qualities.

VEGETABLE TANNED
Vegetable tanned or Veg tan leather is processed using tree bark and various natural substances and then finished with a colour dye. The process gives the leather a very rich feel and sheen. This type of leather tends to be more rigid compared to a Drum Dyed leather. The process is a speciality, which was perfected by technicians over many years.
